panel squeeze!

Filed under: Uncategorized — cchalmers @ 7:37 am

here’s the beginning of a script that changes the scale of out skin pattern based on a manually placed attractor point. We could adapt this to respond to other concerns, such as curvature of the surface, or proximity of pedestrian paths.

another way of varying panel size is shown below: courtesy of our friend Marco Vanucci of AKT engineers London. His Blog has some great images, and some really useful scripts you can cut & paste into Monkey.

Rib Scripting

Filed under: Uncategorized — cchalmers @ 9:22 pm

Here’s a script that may help with constructing ribs from the global form’s surfaces.

(right-click and select save-as from the menu to download)

Ryiobs02.rvb

It’s pretty crude: just extract the isoparms from the surface and use this script to extrude them. The fancy part is that this script makes ribs that are somewhere in-between the straight ones you’d get from the contour command and the wonky ones you’d get from just extruding the isoparms normal to the surface.

This script also generates the intersection lines of the ribs. Select them when you unroll the ribs and they will follow along to the 2D pattern (dovetailing nicely into Andrew’s orient boxes script in the waffle technique below).

Hope this helps! – Chris

Cool Nurbs Relaxation Script

Filed under: Uncategorized — cchalmers @ 6:49 am

After the conversations about hanging chain models and efficient surface shape in today’s pinup, I though this link might come in handy for some of you. David Rutten (reconstructivism.net) has a plugin that will calculate the optimal shape for any single NURBS surface (he’s got one for meshes too). This could be an in-road to a Frei-Otto or Gaudi-style form finding exercise.

Hi everyone, Here are some goodies to help you along for monday.

Sample Scripts

sampleScript1.rvb

sampleScript2.rvb

basic rhino

For the few of you who are new to rhino, please see these tutorials to get you to the point where you feel comfortable navigating around and doing simple operations.

http://www.aversis.be/tutorials/rhinoceros/index.htm

http://animals.nationalgeographic.com/animals/mammals/spider-monkey.html in preparation for  scripting:

if you haven’t already, please see the rhinoscript101 tutorial by david rutten. Also, kokkugia has a large introductiory section on their  wiki.

I will be going through a sample script to explain some of the basic concepts. please download it here to preview.

(either click on the link, then copy-paste into monkey, or right-click on the link and choose save-as)

grasshopper

I will also give a (very) short introduction to grasshopper. McNeel’s educational section is still pretty sparse on this topic, however they have released a new set of video tutorials, and searching their online forum can be useful.

Design Reform also worth checking out for grasshopper tutorials
